“Ready, Set, kNOw:” Making Right Decisions


Program Overview:


The mission of this program is to educate and empower adolescent youth on healthy decision-making as the foundation for successful living inclusive of personal development, self-esteem, goal-setting and the process of relationships. The Program explores and instructs on life skills needed to make good choices inclusive of gang prevention, health (drinking, smoking, drugs, etc.), anatomy and physiology, cultural sensitivity and self-esteem.

Ages: 9-17


Program dates:  July 8, 2019 – July 19, 2019 (two weeks)

9am-3pm (Monday – Thursday)

Accommodations will be made for working parents


Location: Zion Multi-Purpose Facility, 312 Grand Avenue, Freeport, NY

About the Program Director

Mrs. Lerrell Turner – Program Director

Mrs. Lerrell Turner is a retired Office Manager and Human Resources Director for the County of Nassau Department of Senior Citizen Affairs.  Some of her responsibilities included, managing and maintaining office services by directing and organizing office operations, policies and procedures.  Mrs. Turner managed human resources operations by recruiting, selecting, and orienting and training staff members. While serving as director, Mrs. Turner planned, monitored, appraised and reviewed staff job contributions.  She determined production, productivity, quality, and customer-service strategies; designing systems; accumulating resources; resolving problems and implementing change.

 Mrs. Lerrell Turner has had the responsibility of guiding and directing youth at Zion Cathedral COGIC, Freeport for 34 years.   She works to develop  character and help build self-esteem in countless youth.  She  consistently  “builds bridges” and assists youth as they transition from childhood to adulthood, endeavoring to assist them in being equipped with all the necessary components for their journey.

Mrs. Lerrell Turner’s  educational credentials include A Bachelor of Theology and a Bachelor of Religious Education as well as supplemental coursework at Nassau Community College and Hofstra University.


Mrs. Valerie Toya Harris – Program Coordinator/Teacher

Mrs. Valerie Toya Harris is a New York State certified teacher and School Building/District Leader (SBL and SDL).  She is a passionate educator, having been employed for the past 14 years by the NYC Department of Education where she is currently employed as an Instructional Lead Teacher. 

Her educational experiences include: a Bachelor of Arts, a Master of Education and a Master of School District Leader.
